Centra Fire Evacuation Procedure
- If a smoke alarm is activated inside your unit, you will hear an audible alarm coming from your smoke detectors in the ceiling.
- If a smoke alarm is activated in the common areas (all residential floors) you will hear a audible alarm through out the building, accompanied by a verbal command to evacuate via the speakers in your ceiling.
- If a smoke alarm is activated in either basement 1 or 2, not only will you hear the audible alarm and evacuation order, but the Qld Fire Dept (QFD) will attend.
If you have a fire ring 000.
QFD will not automatically respond to an alarm inside your unit, or the common areas above the basement carparks, unless someone calls them.
Note: Common area & basement alarms have a 'whoop whoop whoop' sound.
WHAT TO DO...
In The Event of a Fire Alarm
- Stop what you’re doing immediately.
* Remain calm but act quickly. Do not assume it’s a false alarm. - Check your surroundings.
* Look for signs of smoke, heat, or fire near your unit.
* If safe, take essential items only (keys, phone, medication).
* Put on shoes before leaving.
- Close (but do not lock) your unit door.
* Closing the door helps slow the spread of smoke and fire. Leaving it unlocked saves the need for QFD to force it open if access is required to fight the fire.
An Emergency Evacuation diagram (similar to above) is located on all floors. The diagram indicates where the nearest exits are, where the emergency assembly area is located, and where fire fighting equipment is located.
4. Evacuate via the nearest safe exit.
-
* Use the stairs, never the lift.
* Follow exit signs and head towards the designated assembly area outside the building (See below).
5. Assist others if you can.
* Alert neighbours if they may not have heard the alarm.
* Offer help to elderly or mobility-impaired residents, if safe to do so.
6. Do not return for belongings.
* Safety comes first.
7. Go directly to the assembly area.
* Remain there until the Qld Fire Dept or building management advises it is safe to return.
* Do not re-enter the building until officially cleared.
There are three sets of fire stairs in Centra.
1. Residential floors 1-7. These fire stairs will lead you to ground level on the eastern side of building.
2. Basement 1&2 - east. These fire stairs will lead you to ground level on eastern side of building.
3. Basement 1&2 - west. These fire stairs will lead you to ground level on western side of building.
Note: Ground level residents exit via front or rear doors.
If You Cannot Evacuate Safely
Sometimes smoke or fire makes the corridor or stairwell unsafe. In that case, it is safer to stay inside your apartment because:
-
Your unit is designed as a fire compartment — walls, floors, and doors are built to resist fire and smoke for a period of time.
-
Stairwells can quickly fill with smoke if the fire is nearby, which is more dangerous than remaining inside a sealed unit.
What to Do if You Stay Inside
-
Close your apartment door and block any gaps with wet towels or blankets to stop smoke.
-
Move to a window or balcony where firefighters can see you.
-
Call 000, state your exact location (building name, address, unit number), and tell them you are unable to evacuate.
-
Stay low to the ground where the air is clearer if smoke enters.
Summary:
-
If the fire stairs are clear and safe → evacuate.
-
If smoke or fire blocks your path → stay inside your unit, seal it, and call for help.
