Your Water Meter
Your water meter is located in a cupboard in the common area on your floor. The door marked 'WATER'.
The meter is read quarterly by Redland City Council, who can access the cupboard and take the reading from your meter.
Your Main Water Shut Off Valve
Each apartment has a main water shut-off valve. It is generally located on a wall inside one of your lower laundry cupboards. The valve will look similar to the image shown on right.
-
To turn off your mains water, simply turn the lever a quarter turn (90°) anti-clockwise.
-
There is also a small water tap behind your fridge (usually positioned high up) which is used for fridges that are connected for ice or chilled water.
NOTE:
When absent from your unit for an extended period, it's advisable to turn the water off at your main shut off valve before leaving. After doing so, turn a tap on for a second or two, to release the pressure.

Braided Hoses
Flexible hoses that connect your taps to the water supply.
Flexible hoses
The taps in your kitchen, laundry, and bathrooms are connected to the water supply using metal braided flexible hoses. These hoses have a rubber inner layer covered by a braided metal casing Unfortunately, over time this inner rubber will perish. When it fails, it can cause significant water damage to your unit — as well as those units below you.
What you should do:
-
Check your hoses regularly.
-
Look for any rust marks, bulges, or fraying on the braided casing.
-
If you notice anything unusual, contact a plumber for advice straight away.
Regular checks can help prevent leaks and protect both your apartment and the building.

Plumbed fridges
The hose connecting water to you fridge is generally a plastic tube (PEX or PVC). Turning the tap off behind your fridge is not a bad idea if you prefer not to turn off the main valve. These plastic hoses can become brittle and give way resulting in a leak that could caused flooding. If you turn off the fridge water, don't forget to release the pressure by letting a small amount of water run from the fridge tap.
It is advisable to turn the water off to your fridge if away for an extended period to avoid potential flooding.
