Centra's - Containers For Change

Turn Your Empties into Upgrades for Centra!

Thanks to the Queensland Governments Containers for Change scheme, we can turn our empty containers into money to help improve our building!

How It Works for Us at Centra

A dedicated group of your fellow residents ("Bin Divers"!) voluntarily collect all the eligible containers from our grey/green bins. They sort them and take them to a refund point, earning 10 cents for every single one.

Where Does the Money Go?

Every dollar earned goes directly back into building in the form of paying for materials, equipment and other small items that is required to maintain the building! This fund is used for things like:

  • Landscaping supplies for our gardens 🪴

  • Buy material for maintenance & improvements

  • Purchasing of items for our social areas

  • Buying gas (BBQ & gas fireplace), petrol (mower)

It's a fantastic, simple way for us to fund improvements without the need to raise levies.

How You Can Help

  1. Save the container. Instead of tossing it in the general waste or recycle bin, place your empty eligible containers in the 'Containers for Change' bins (Green & black bins in large bin room).
  2. That's it! Our Bin Divers will take care of the rest.

IMPORTANT:  PLEASE DO NOT throw general rubbish in recycle bins, use BIN ROOM (opposite)

What to Recycle for the 10c Refund:

Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a 10-cent refund.

Eligible containers must:

  • Be included on the scheme’s list of products. Use the eligibility checker to ensure your containers are eligible.   Click - Container checker
  • Display the refund mark (e.g. “10c refund.  Please note that glass wine and pure spirit bottles are exempt from displaying the 10c mark until January 2027.

There are some beverage containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than 3L.

Excluded containers include:

  • Plain milk containers of all sizes including plant-based milk substitutes
  • Cask wine
  • Containers 1L or more that contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water
  • Concentrated/undiluted cordial or syrup containers
  • Sachets above 250ml that have contained wine
  • Registered health tonics

A massive thank you to our volunteer Bin Divers who make this all possible. The more we all contribute, the more they can raise for the maintenance of the building.
